We all have to agree that golden retrievers have one of the most beautiful coats in the dog world. But their double-coated fur is more susceptible to bad odor. Today in this article, we will look into five reasons why the golden retriever stinks and what you can do about it.

Why does your Golden Retriever Stink so much?

Table of Contents

1. Bacteria or Yeast

The thick double-coated fur of golden retrievers traps dirt and debris making it a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and yeast. Without regular grooming, the population of microbes multiplies and results in a bad odor.

Every pet has yeast and bacteria on their skin. However, without frequent baths, they grow in number. They are also the reason why your Goldie itches so much. To avoid this, bathe your Golden Retriever once a month with an oatmeal shampoo and brush their coat at least twice a week.

2. Body Oil

The skin of golden retrievers releases essential body oils, which keep the skin moisturized. However, over time, their body oil accumulates and starts stinking. To avoid this, brush their coat twice a week to evenly spread over the body and remove dirt.

3. Gas Intolerance

Intolerance to an ingredient present in their diet can make your Goldie gassy, which will result in stinky farts. You can either change the diet or consult with your vet regarding this problem.

4. Ear infection

Golden Retrievers have a droopy ear, which blocks direct sunlight and creates a moist environment inside their ears. This moist environment is a perfect breeding ground for infections.

This infection can emit a strong, stinky odor from their ears. To avoid this, clean your dog's ears regularly with a clean tissue and ear-cleaning fluid.

5. Dental Problems

Dental problems like plaque and tartar buildup can lead to stinky breath. To prevent this, brush your dog's teeth every day and give him chew treats once in a while.

6. The Wet Smell

Does your golden retriever smell weird whenever he gets wet? This is because when your dog goes out for a walk, numerous microorganisms present in the environment stick to his coat.

And when these microbes come in contact with water, they dislodge and give out a strong smell. You cannot do anything about it, except clean your pooch with a fresh towel.

7. Health Problems

Some health problems like skin infection can also lead to a stinky dog. If that's the case, then consult your veterinarian.

Wrapping Up

Golden Retrievers, or as a matter of fact, every animal, has a natural body odor. I personally am okay with my Charlie's natural smell. But if you're not, then you can get a dog perfume to make your pooch smell fresh.
